Founded in 2019, St.Louis Doula Project is lead by an interdisciplinary team of women of color. In December 2018, the APBP board voted to approve an acquisition by Ostara Initiative, Inc., the home of the Minnesota Prison Doula Project, to create long-term stability and sustainability for our work in Alabama and elsewhere. The acquisition was completed on June 30, 2019, and APBP became a program of Ostara Initiative, Inc. There are 200,000 women in US prisons. That’s 1/3 of the world’s incarcerated women and this number is growing faster than ever. About two in three of these Prison Birth Project is a student organization at the University of Michigan that aims to inspire students and community members to advocate for incarcerated mothers and birthing people. We approach this issue by creating a dialogue surrounding pregnancy and incarceration to address the issues they face while inside. Postpartum doula fees are by the hour and range from $25-$55, (15 hours minimum).
